We can evidence numerous cases of obesity among different age levels in the US. The Canadian criminal justice system is often represented by the balanced scales of justice. These scales symbolize the need for the law to be viewed objectively in order to ensure a fair determination of innocence (Griffiths, 2011). Ideally, the criminal justice system should incorporate the values of the scales of justice to control crime and impose penalties on those who violate the law. However, despite justice being supposedly impartial, there is an overwhelming representation of Aboriginal people in all stages of the criminal justice process, from the charging of the individuals in court to their sentence in prison (Jordan, 2014). William Blake`s Nurse Songs Essays - , Term Papers
William Blake`s Nurse Songs T. S. Eliot once said of Blake's writings, "The Songs of Innocence and the Songs of Experience"... are the poems of man with a profound interest in human emotions, and a profound knowledge of them." (Grant 507) In these books of poetry and art, written and drawn by William Blake himself, are depictions of the poor, the colored, the underdog and the child's innocence and the man's experience. The focus of my paper will be on Blake's use of simple language, metaphors and drawings to show the two different states of the human spirit: innocence and experience. I hope to show this through two poems: the "Nurse's Song" of innocents and the "NURSES Song" of experience. In the first poem, the poem representing innocence, the nurse is in the background image as a pretty, young woman, sitting and reading by a tree. Her mood is peaceful and at rest "When the voices of children are heard on the green / And laughing is heard on the hill." (Blake 23) The drawing and the poem also convey a sense of peace and trust. The children are na?ve and vulnerable to the pain, the sorrow, and the evils of the perverted world; yet their faith in the fact that they are protected by the nurse, like a lamb by his shepherd, is clear from their play. The nurse herself trusts that the children are safe from perversions because of their voices and laughter. The picture shows this trust of the children through their carefree play, holding hands and dancing in a ring. In the next stanza, the nurse seems to step into her knowledge of experience: Then come home my children, the sun is gone down And the dews of night arise Come Come Leave off play, and let us away Till the morning appears in the skies. (ll. 5-8) She asks them to come in, so as to protect them from the dangers, or maybe just from exposure, to the night and its dampness. Her concern for what the darkness brings can only mean she has experienced the night before. The very minute this stanza begins, a weeping willow tree appears on the right side of the lines. It does not go away until the drama is over and the children get to stay out and continue their play. Just as quickly as the nurse expresses her concern, the children in their innocence express their desire to play more. The children, with their wise innocence, proclaim it is still light out; and not only do they know it, but the sheep still grazing and the birds still flying know it too. With this, the nurse gives in to them, and the children are victorious. By her giving in to them, she shows love and understanding for their knowledge of what is around them. In so doing, she shows that innocence obtains knowledge just as well as an experienced adult. Therefore, would it not be safe to assume that without the corruption of certain experiences the soul can still be knowledgeable and wise? As the poem ends, the echo of laughter and shouting again rules the hills. By returning to the echoing laughter of children, Blake returns the reader to the innocence felt in the beginning. In addition, by using the word "echoed" to describe how the children's play reverberates throughout the hills, he gives the children's innocence eternity. The innocence and joy these children possess are mirrored in "Infant Joy." "Infant Joy" is about a baby who is just two days old. There is a short dialogue between the baby and the baby's mother: "I happy am/ Joy is my name, /Sweet joy befall thee!" (ll. 3-5), which describes the simplest form of innocence and joy Blake could ever portray. The poem continues with the sweetness and innocence that a baby represents. The nurse of experience reacts quite differently to the children in their play and the baby of joy. In this poem, a healthy, middle aged nurse brushes a boy's hair. A little girl sits down behind the boy. The illustration shows no sign of carefree play and gives off the impression that these children are repressed. Surrounding the picture is a wreath of vines, which the book defines as the symbol of pleasures the boy will find in his life, pleasures that the boy will find regardless of the repression of experienced others. The Voice Within - Critical Analysis essays I felt that this song was explicit in its dealings with experience, as it focused generally on the ideas that one can only truly trust ones self when times get rough, and that it is through fighting through your bad experiences that you come out stronger. Innocence was portrayed mostly through symbolism and the repetition of the idea of the young girl. Also, the song drew parallels within itself, so as to depict the journey from innocence to experience, in self-reference. Experience was explored in the text through various vehicles, and in its various manifestations. The idea that the world has fallen in line two, expresses a sense of total misery and vulnerability. It is only through an awful or a series of awful experiences the world. Also, the line is very similar to the idiom ones wall is falling. The similarity draws the audiences attention to the idea that the subject is exposed to the adversities of the world, without any protection or salvation. In line four, the words, youll soon be free to fly evoke images of a soaring eagle, which is a very powerful symbol of experience, and of overcoming the experiences which may have prevented one from succeeding in their pursuits. I felt that the next stanza and the fifth stanza were poignant in their scrutiny of innocence, and paralleled each other befittingly. I felt that the idea of dreaming and the concept of nothing is harder than it seems reflected the childlike concepts that most people lose with maturity in both age and practise. Thus the image evoked is the young girl figure we have become aquatinted with, in the fantastic state of naivety. From 1990 to 1996, the names were geographic names like Africa, Alaska and Inca. Then it uses abstract names like Apollo and Gravity. Since 2003, Axeââ¬â¢s deodorants give the possibility for the men to attract many women. Its last launching was in 2008: Dark Temptation. It is a smelling chocolate smelling fragrance; thanks to chocolate, the women will find Axe users irresistible. Axe also launches limited edition variants like Recover and Shock in 2008. However, Axe encountered many controversies like its sexist and depraving advertisement and its deodorants include ingredients tested on animals. The industry Axe is a one of the European leader of the male grooming products thanks especially to the marketing of it lead product: the deodorant body spray. However, several competitors with the same product exist in the market. Therefore, sailing ships are used as a trademark. Over the years, those various ships have become a valuable trademark for Old Spice male product. Old Spice managed to advertise his products in famous movies (for example, E. T. ) or in commercials with famous actors like Neil Patrick Harris in 2008. Thus, Old Spice is using a different kind of advertising than Axe and it works in the American market. Now, I will describe the main new entrant in the market the brand RGX ââ¬â and how the brand tries to break into the body spray market. RGX is owned by Dial and was launched in January 2007. As a new entrant, the main difficulty for the RGXââ¬â¢s product is to enter a body spray market with an excellent marketing strategy. First, the RGXââ¬â¢s product is mainly directed at older men that is to say customers who donââ¬â¢t actually use a competitor product. Secondly, the brand tries to create buzz on Internet via a website called RGX Life but also he tries to do commercials and online banners with a famous actress Rachel Specter. Menââ¬â¢s magazines are also a part of the advertising campaign. The advertising will also be like Axe and TAG (how boy can get girls) but will be more focused on mature men (what a girl wants in a man and what separates a man from a boy). {draw:a} The packaging is also an appeal to maturity. Instead of the black plastic of Axe (which suggests affairs), the RGXââ¬â¢s packaging will be modified as an ââ¬Å"updated aerosol canâ⬠more futuristic and made in aluminum. Axeââ¬â¢s lead product is a deodorant body spray which has a specific smell that s to say it mixes a deodorant and a perfume. So, substitute products might be a simple deodorant (for example, Narta Deodorant), a perfume or Cologne. It is the intent of this writer to put current knowledge into a perspective that shows CBD to be an addiction that stands on its own merit. A term that many of us dont think about on a day to day basis, because we have enough to eat. However there are many In the world who lack even enough food to sustain a healthy life and many people end up dying of starvation. 3. Deaths In Children Under Five 4. Hunger In the U. S Hunger Is growing to be a serious problem In the united States. In 2006 35. 5 million people do not have access to enough food to sustain a healthy lifestyle. The people in the united States who represent the common face of hunger would surprise many.An elderly couple struggling to pay medical bills; a single parent trying to support his/her children; all the way to a child at school who can't focus because they didnt have enough to eat the day before. 5. Hunger in the World In the year 2007, 923 million people where undernourished. With about 900 million of those people residing in developing countries. Each day 16000 children die from hunger-related causes, one child every five seconds Countries in which a large portion of the population battles hunger dally are typically poor.And do not have the enefits of things Ilke soup kitchens and food stamps. Informative Speech: Alfred Nobel
What would you say if one morning you wake up, read by mistake your own obituary, and see what people think about you? How would you like to be called:â⬠the merchant of death, who built a fortune, by discovering new ways to mutilate and kill, is deadâ⬠. This happened to Alfred Nobel. The story is that when Alfred Nobelââ¬â¢s brother died, a French newspaper mistakenly published an obituary of Alfred. When he read this, he remained pained all of his life. The purpose of my speech is to inform you who Alfred Nobel is.Although, I have not known Alfred Nobel in person, by reading his biographies, along with my great interest in history of inventors qualifies me to speak on this matter. Today I would like to inform you, who Alfred Nobel is; what he had done to be famous, and how he affected our world/society. In the beginning, I will start with some background information, including place, family and education. Alfred Nobel was born on October 21, 1833, Stockholm, Sweden.He was the forth son of Caroline and Immanuele Nobel, a manufacturer of torpedoes, mines and explosives. In order to achieve better life conditions, when Alfred was nine years old, the family moved to Petersburg, Russia, where Alfred received private education. From the beginning, Alfred proved to be a genius. He was not only a brilliant student with vastly laboratory skills, but also a competent chemist. By the age of seventeen, he was fluently writing and speaking in five languages: English, French, German, Russian, as well as Swedish.According to Kenne Fant in a biography called ââ¬Å"Alfred Nobelâ⬠: ââ¬Å" All his life he derived nearly as much pleasure experimenting with language as he did experimenting with acids and powders in his laboratory(p. 5, ch. 13). â⬠Trying to sum up his life in one sentence, he offered the following: ââ¬Å" I am a misanthrope and yet utterly benevolent, have more then one screw loose yet am a super-idealist who digest philosophy more effic iently than food. â⬠Today, since 1902, we mainly recognize Alfred Nobel as the founder of the Nobel Prize.Today, since 1902, most of the people recognize Alfred Nobel as the founder of The Nobel Prize. Now that I gave you some brief information about who Alfred Nobel is, I will tell you how he became famous. Fascinated by the speculative and experimental elements of chemistry, Alfred transformed his kitchen into a small laboratory. From the beginning, he became very interested in the inexplicable behavior of an explosive substance called nitroglycerine. Nitroglycerine is a yellow liquid that is explosive near sudden heat; also today, it is used as a vasodilator medicine.Therefore, in 1863, Alfred Nobel was the first to solve the mystery of detonating NG in a practical useful way. This detonator marked the beginning of Nobelââ¬â¢s reputation as an inventor. According to British historian F. D. Miles, ââ¬Å"the introduction of a detonating cap is without doubt the greatest d iscovery that has ever been made, in the theory and practice of explosives. On this discovery all modern application of explosives is based (p. 57, ch. 12). â⬠However, due to its dangerous properties, NG was very risky to handle and transport.In fact, it was so dangerous, that Nobelââ¬â¢s factory blew up killing his younger brother and other innocent people. After this incident, Alfred became even more determined in finding a new foolproof way to transport NG, but without diminishing its blasting power. Therefore, in 1867, once again Alfred proved himself the inventor of the impossible ââ¬â a reddish-yellow plastic mass, called dynamite, established his fame world wide, for the second time. In his experiments, he experiment in search of better ones, so in 1875 he invented a more powerful form of dynamite, called blasting gelatin.Now that you know how Alfred Nobel became famous, I will tell you how the result of his experiments along with the legacy he left behind affect ed our society. First, critics believe that Alfred Nobel created his explosives for peace purposes only. His explosive substances were critical to mining operations and communication systems, such as the construction of the railroads and tunnels. Secondly, Alfred, himself said, ââ¬Å"There is nothing in our world that can not be misusedâ⬠. Thus, ballistite, recognized as one of Nobelââ¬â¢s most disturbing inventions, revolutionized the munitions industry.Moreover, three decades later, Krummel, one of his explosives factories became the site of Germanyââ¬â¢s largest atomic reactor. In addition, the dynamite had its first use in 1870 when the Franco-Prussian war broke out. At his death, in 1896, ninety factories of manufacturing explosives and ammunition already existed. However, instead of all his ââ¬Å"demonic devicesâ⬠that he created, Alfred never wanted to be remembered as the ââ¬Å"merchant of death who kills and mutilateâ⬠, thereby he rewrote his will, c reating the Nobel Peace Prize.Since 1902, every year in Sweden, the Nobel prize is awarded for achievements in chemistry, physics, psychology, medicine or literature and of peace. Superior strength of an individual could be overruled by several individuals. Freud then said that Thus we see that right is the might of a community. That is true, but now the violence no longer rests in the hands of the individual, but in the hands of the entire community. Differences Between Old and New SAT There will be a lot of minute differences between the two tests, but the big changes are: There will be twosections instead of three: Math andEvidence-Based Reading and Writing. Due to these section changes, the composite scores range will be 400 to 1600, instead of 600 to 2400. The types of questions asked will be changed. For example, the newEvidence-Based Reading and Writingsection will no longer have the sentence completion vocabulary questions. Instead, there will bemore passage-based critical thinking questions. There will be no penalty for guessing on questions. On the old SAT, you received minus à ¼ point for every incorrect answer. There are many more changes to the new SAT, and I recommend you read about the others as well. However, the changes I mentioned are the biggest and most important to understanding the conversion. How to Convert 2400 to 1600 The College Board has not announced any specific conversion method (nor have colleges announced how they will compare the old and new test). However, here at PrepScholar, we have come up withtwo possible conversion methods. Fast Method: Simply multiply the old SAT score by ââ¦â. For example, if you received 1800 on the old SAT, the calculation would be 1800 x ââ¦â = 1200. Yournew SAT score would be 1200.There are a couple issues with this fast method. It doesnââ¬â¢t take into account that Math will be more heavily weighted on the new SAT (since it will make up à ½ instead of ââ¦â of the score), while the Critical Reading and Writing will count less as they are combined. Our next method resolves this issue. Weighted Method: First, average the Critical Reading and Writing section scores. Then, add that average to the Math section. For example, if you received 1800 on the old SAT (Math 700, Critical Reading 650, Writing 450), you would first average 650 and 450. (650 + 450) / 2 = 550, then add that to Math, 550 + 700 = 1250. Yournew score would be 1250. However, if you received 1800 on the old SAT but your score breakdowns were Reading 700, Math 450, Writing 650, you would have a different new composite SAT score. (700+650) / 2 = 675, then add Math. 675 + 450 = 1125. Your new score would be 1125. With the same composite score (1800), you can end up with two different new SAT scores based on the Fast or Weighted Method. Using the Weighted Method, your composite score will be higher if Math was your best section or lower if Math was your worst section.Use the Weighted Method for a more accurate conversion that takes into account the importanceof each section on the new SAT. What Does This Conversion Mean For You? As I mentioned before, Math is more heavily weighted, as it will now account for à ½ your composite score instead of ââ¦â. If you're good at Math, this is great news! As you could see above, your high Math score will bring up your composite score. If, on the other hand, you struggle in Math, this change isn'tso great. As you could see above, if Math is your weakest section, you will end up with a lower composite score on the new SAT.You'll need to do more SAT Math preparation to make sure you get a high Math score, so you get a high composite score. Also, the types of questions asked will be changing. As I mentioned, there will no longer be any fill in the blank vocabulary questions. Instead, there will be more critical thinking and data analysis questions. If your strength is memorization, you'll probably not do as well on the new SAT. Richard Wilbur Boy at the window Essay When one is considered naive, it has been thought to determine one as ââ¬Å"having or showing a lack of experience, judgment, or information; credulousâ⬠(www. dictionary. com). In Richard Wilbursââ¬â¢ poem, Boy at the Window, Wilbur uses simple form language to paint the image of the boy staring out the window at the snowman. In the beginning of the poem, Wilbur reveals two characters, one a snowman and the other a young boy. Both characters in the poem seem to have a connection to each other, and may even consider themselves, friends. Perhaps the boy may have helped to build the snowman. One day during an incoming storm, the boy peers outside the window and appears to be frightened for the snowman because the snowman has no shelter from the storm ââ¬Å"In dusk and cold is more than he can bearâ⬠(Clugston, 2010). The boy fears for the snowmanââ¬â¢s life because the boy realizes the rain will melt the snowman away. However the snowman does not want to come inside the warm house with the boy for fear he will melt and die. In this case who is naive, the boy or the snowman? Beginning from the perspective of the boy staring out the window, it is obvious the boy feels helpless. The boy realizes that a storm is coming, ââ¬Å"A night of gnashing and enormous moanâ⬠, (Clugston, 2010) which will eventually wash away the snowman. When the boy feels the snowman is going to die the boys emotions turns to one of hurt. The young boy does not understand that the snowman needs the cold to survive, even if it means death when it rains. The tone of the poem indicated that perhaps the boy feared what the outside world held for the snowman, and the storm intensified that. In one world, the inside, the boy felt ââ¬Å"Such warmth, such light, such love, and so much fearâ⬠(Clugston, 2010). He wanted the snowman to experience the same warmth as he did because the boy took comfort in his surroundings and identified what made him feel safe in his eyes. On the other hand, perhaps the snowman felt sympathy for the young boy. From the outside, the snowman seems to understand how the boy is feeling. So the snowman sheds a tear for the boy because he understands the boy cares a lot about him, ââ¬Å"He melts enough to drop from one soft eye A trickle of the purest rain, a tearâ⬠, (Clugston, 2010). Because the snowman does not have a fear of the rain, the snowman does not seem to understand that the storm will cause him to melt away, as he is quite comfortable with being outside in the cold. While the snowman looks quite comfortable outside, the snowman may not portray that feeling to the young boy looking at the snowman from his home. Overall, the theme of the play speaks volumes about being naive and misinterpretation of viewing another personsââ¬â¢ life and how they choose to live it. This point of view that Wilbur tried to relay to the reader allowed me to focus more so on the snowman and how he wanted to live than the boy. As human beings, one always wants to change what they believe to be wrong in society without asking the person(s) if they want the change. One should never determine how a personââ¬â¢s life should be lived based off of how they are living there own life. But this fact that we are not aware of certain systematically proceeding misinterpretations does not only shape the image of personality, as constituted in the naive and experience of everyday life, but also influences scientific thought, (Ichheiser, 1943). Both are considered to be inexperienced about the fundamentals of life and how they both lived. The boy took comfort in believing that if the snowman were rescued by bringing the snowman in the house, the snowman would be saved. The snowman believed that by staying outside, no harm would come to him and he was not alone or afraid of the incoming weather, because he had nothing to fear of living outside alone and in the dark. The boy and the snowman lived two diverse lives, one that could never be meshed together because of the scientific fact that one character lived a cold life and the other character lived a life in which there was warmth.

Exploring the Characters of Havisham and Magwich in Dickens Great Expectations :: Great Expectations Essays
Dickens seems to develop characters who are so compelling that the reader needs to know whatââ¬â¢s going to happen next... When we first met Magwich he seems to be a nasty and manipulative convict, bullying a small, naive little boy called Pip for basic food of which he is lacking, shortly after Pip meets him again but your opinion of Magwich changes entirely he defends Pip of the stealing actions he bullied him into. Then he is unthought-of for some time in the book until he appears again after Pips transformation from young lower class boy to a gentleman. The fact he is the reason of Pips transformation shows him as the hero, but he is still wanted for crime. Magwich from the first time we meet him is described in great detail by timid Pip who isnââ¬â¢t described in a lot of detail at all, almost as if his identity is left for the reader to decide. Magwich is described as ...ââ¬Å"a fearful man, all in course gray, with a great iron on his leg. A man with no hat, and with broken shoes and with an old rag tied around his headâ⬠. The fact that he isnââ¬â¢t wearing a hat in the Victorian times was considered rude, however he is wearing an rag proving he is dignified and polite but ââ¬Å"old ragâ⬠suggests he is poor and of the lower class. The setting when Magwich first appears is at the ââ¬Å"graveyardâ⬠there seems to be an air of death, raw and gloomy setting. The setting seems too described in great depth as if itââ¬â¢s important to the story; the setting seems to mirror Magwich bleak and raw and lonely and isolated. This seems to represent his life and neglection. Whereas the same setting for Pip is peaceful place to remember his late mother and father, seemingly now he is left with this elder sister who treats him and her blacksmith husband, Joe, terribly. As well as this when we first meet Miss Havisham in chapter 8 she is described with a lengthy description also. Her appearance is described as skeleton like and decaying. She is trapped in a time warp due to her own accord, living in a neglected house in the same room at the exact same time as her soon to be husband competent left her, the misfortune of her neglection left her bitter and seemingly slightly twisted for example she wants Pip and Estella to ââ¬Å"playâ⬠.

Factory Work Essay
In Deborah Boeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Factory Workâ⬠(n.d.) the author paints a picture of the monotonous and sometimes dangerous work that goes on in the life of a low income factory worker. The character remarks how the hot glue machine she works ââ¬Å"ateâ⬠her shirt once, and how one of her co-workers used to have long hair until the machine ââ¬Å"gotâ⬠it. The character has been doing the same repetitive job over and over. Now she no longer needs to think about what she is doing and her mind wanders as she is working. While the character thinks that it isnââ¬â¢t bad in the factory, there is an overall sense of boredom and sadness with the life she leads. People from a low socioeconomic class such as the main character are often forced into dull monotonous jobs where they make enough money to survive but not to advance out of the system. As a result of her class, the character is willing to put up with the dangers, the lack of stimulation, and the threat of being lai d off because she is still bringing in a paycheck (Boe, n.d.). This poem reminds me of two monotonous jobs that I had right out of high school. Since I was just a teenager with no work experience and no marketable skills, I had very limited options in the jobs that I could get. The first job that I had was working part time as a tour guide at a pumpkin patch. I would sit on the hay wagon and collect the tickets of the passengers, and once we had enough people loaded the tractor would start up and take us around the farm. This is where the monotony would kick in. I had the speech so memorized that I could recite it perfectly several years after. I didnââ¬â¢t have to think about the words that were coming out of my mouth, I would just need to stand there and let the speech roll out. I think the cadence occupied more of my thoughts than the actual words. Even though the job was monotonous I still really enjoyed being outside and seeing peopleââ¬â¢s reactions to the farm. The second job I had that was monotonous was working fast food in the mall food court. This was my first real job working 8 hours a day 5 days a week. The quality of workforce they had can be gauged by the fact that the owner offered me a management position after my second day there. I spent hours and hours standing behind a hot grill, dropping meat and vegetables on as the order was called over the loud speaker. While this job required as much thought as the pumpkin patch did, here I felt like I was trapped inside my mind as I worked. At the pumpkin patch I could enjoy the sunshine, but in the mall you have very little understanding of what is going on outside. The sun could be shining, it could be raining, and it might be daytime or night time. In the mall you learn not to say good morning or afternoon because youââ¬â¢re never really that sure of the time. Your internal clock loses all perspective in the fake lighting. I would take working outside in real light any time. I can associate with the character in ââ¬Å"Factory Workâ⬠(Boe, n.d.) because my socioeconomic class trapped me in a monotonous job.

Langston Hughes- Salvation
Langston Hughes- Salvation Salvation, how many people actually know what it truly means? Better yet, how many times do citizens hear that salvation is the answer to all problems? This, yes, is true, but how many times are Christians encouraged to accept salvation without knowing what they are doing. Langston caught in the middle, sits on the ââ¬Ëmournersââ¬â¢ benchââ¬â¢ waiting to hear Christ, waiting to feel The Lord, and waiting to somehow see Jesus. In Langston Hughesââ¬â¢ short story Salvation, one is reminded of the biggest controversy found in churches. In this story, the author presents many themes: Man vs.Man, Man vs. Self, and Faith vs. Religion. In Langston Hughesââ¬â¢ Salvation, the themes Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, and Faith vs. Religion are shown through the characters, setting, and all its symbolism. The theme Man vs. Man is shown through the characters. Langston, as a Protagonist, who is a young boy, was told by his aunt that ââ¬Å"you could feel and he ar Jesus in your soulâ⬠(Hughes, pg. 534), sits patiently, waiting to literally feel and hear Jesus. Langston was in a conflict with his aunt, the deacons, the crying old ladies, and the pastor because they wanted him to stand and accept salvation on their terms.Langston feels and thinks differently. He waits to see his Lord, feel his Lordââ¬â¢s presence, and hear his Lordââ¬â¢s voice. Instead, he hears the pastor saying over and over ââ¬Å"why donââ¬â¢t you come? My dear child, why donââ¬â¢t you come to Jesus? â⬠(Hughes, pg. 534) After seeing his friend, he finally decides to get up just to make the church happy. Later on in the story he is very sad because deep down he knows that he has lied to the whole congregation and decides he doesnââ¬â¢t believe in the Lord. Many, just like Langston, are in conflict with the church and Leaders.Many donââ¬â¢t hear the ââ¬Å"Saviorsâ⬠voice audibly; therefore, they follow the voices that are heard. Just like Langston, many begin to doubt that a true God exist because he canââ¬â¢t be seen or heard. Along with Man vs. Man, the theme Man vs. Self is also shown in the setting. Langston fought with himself internally because he struggled with not knowing what to do. He knows what to expect, and what he had expected didnââ¬â¢t come. Which is why, he struggles internally with himself especially since he is in the church where he thinks the Lord should be at and show himself to Langston.Langston wanted the Lord, he wanted Salvation but he wants ââ¬Å"proof,â⬠that The Lord exist. Langston waits to feel, hear, and see the Lord He knows how to make the church happy by lying about him being saved but he knows that he truly wasnââ¬â¢t. He sits on the mournersââ¬â¢ bench surrendering all and waiting for the Lord to find him; but, he did not realize that he was conflicted on the inside. This is shown the night he was crying in the room. The church is an important place which seems to be why he does not seem to show how he truly feels.At home he seems to be free and expresses his true emotions about the situation but behind closed doors to himself. He struggles with himself. He feels badly for lying to the whole church. At the same time he thinks how he would let them down and tell them he lied after hearing his aunt speak to her husband saying how he has the Lord in him. He has this struggle with himself throughout the whole story. Additionally, the theme Faith vs. Religion is also shown by the use of symbolism, which interrelates with the story.As Langston states in the short story, a revival is going on at his Aunts church. Revival is a time where the reawakening of religious fervor happens. As in the story, readers believe that the symbolism behind Revivals pressured Langston to accept salvation. Revival is portrayed as a symbol of Christianity; and, in Langstonââ¬â¢s positions, he accepted salvation because he felt the pressure of being in a church and also being among many who have come to seek revival. Of course, when at a revival, church goers repent and accept Christ.The pressure of being in a church and the pressure of the people around the main character, Langston, pushed him to accept Salvation. Langston had the weight of the church pushing him to get up and walk to the platform. The use of symbolism, we are reminded of the Religion vs. Faith theme. The pastor used his authoritative figure to pressure young Langston to stand up and walk towards him. He, the pastor, sang the words ââ¬Å"why donââ¬â¢t you come to Jesusâ⬠while holding his hands out to Langston. Is the Pastor supposed to represent Jesus?In the end, Langston was ââ¬Å"saved from his sinâ⬠, but at the same time, ââ¬Å"not truly saved. â⬠Humans, tend to let their surroundings influence who they are and where we end up in life. Langstonââ¬â¢s story portrays the life and how people live it. He portrays it by falling into peer pressure; the n in the end, not being able to fully accept his choice which leads to not believing there was ever a Jesus. Many themes can wrap up the short story Salvation; Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, and Faith vs. Religion through the character, setting and use of symbolism wraps up the story in those three aspects of literature.
